I Remember When with Milton Rendell

Do you remember what you used to do to get pocket money?  As a kid growing up in Guildford when you wanted to make a couple of bob you would cross the Helena River to the back of the Rosehill Country Club and go looking for golf balls. There was a driving range on the river side but also around the course itself there were drains and grass areas you could wonder around and find the odd stray ball which you would try and sell to the golfers on the course you had to be careful you hadn’t pinched one of their own balls and were trying to sell the balls back to them.

On a good day you could make a few dollars I wasn’t much good at finding the balls, patience wasn’t my greatest asset at that age but a few guys I know did quite well. Jim Barter was in charge of the course in those days and the Rosehill Country Club had a great venue there for functions. I went to many a wedding there over the years and a few pie nights for the Guildford Footy Club.

A steak house called The Stables was also there. There used to be a bridge that crossed the Helena River which we used to cross at the end of a track which came off Helena Street. I think it was previously used by the horse and carts in its day. These days I still go for walks along the river on the South Guildford side every weekend but can’t find any golf balls.
