Do you remember your first day at high school I am a Govo boy and in the seventies it was an interesting time to start high school.
I thought Guildford Primary was big then I walked into Govo it was huge and a complete different dynamic to what I was used to for school. My first year class was 1-1 and our form teacher was Miss Griffiths she use to do take Social Studies as well.
I remember you had to learn the local language so you didn’t seem like a little kid, an example of that is there was no play time, we had recesses and the fact you changed classes rooms regularly during the day was a huge change from primary school and trying to remember which class you were supposed to be in next was huge but you got use to it.
The kids who dragged their feet from class to class learnt quickly it wasn’t on. I think the less sociable kids found it hard at first and knowing where you could go at lunch etc was interesting. Different groups dominated certain areas with the old hockey shed being one of those areas.
I don’t think much of that has changed these days. I am lucky with my work I bump into old school mates and the other day I bumped into a guy we called Chops better known as Johnny Lamberto and we shared a few stories and talked about the characters we knew from our old school days.
We realised it has nearly been fifty years since that first day at high school way back in 1973, makes you feel old. Soon a new wave of kids will go through the same experience as we did all those years ago.
