Do you remember when services that today we are told are extra were available once common in every town and free. Someone mentioned to Lynette who works with me that she remembers my family delivering bread to her home when she was a child back in the 1940 and 1950’s in a horse and cart.
She mentioned she clearly remembered the driver (who probably was my Uncle Dave he was Dad’s older brother. My Dad Harry was the Head Baker with his Dad, Stan) get off his cart placing a feedbag on the horse’s nose and then coming in to deliver the bread and that was done all day every day for years.
I remember the milkman and bread being delivered but by Vans Bread in the morning and milk in the evenings or early morning in my time in the 1960’s & 1970’s. The fruit and vegie truck came down our street once a week as well he would ring his bell and everyone would come out to inspect his goods.
Most of the people who drove the vans and horse carts had a few stories to tell and knew everyone by name in most cases and was just a normal for daily life in the area. Soft drinks were home delivered as well and now we can laugh because we even use to mail every day and if there was an important message you had to get well you got telegram.
I said telegram to my kids the other day and they laughed didn’t have a clue what I was talking about. In some ways it starting to get back to the old days but I am not sure we will see the characters of that time who did these things everyday and were part of our community. Please keep an eye out soon we are hoping to do a series of videos for 'I Remember When starting late March.
