Do you remember when you were lucky enough to order your lunch from the canteen or local shop? I Saw on social media the other day the old paper bag with a lunch order written on it and brought back some memories. I think my first lunch order cost me twenty cents and that was a sandwich and a drink. 1973 when I started school at Govo a buttered roll was five cents and a vanilla slice was seven cents so when you had fifty cents for your lunch it was a feast. Local footy is about to kick off with the mighty Swans kicking off their season. I spent many a home game sitting on the hill in the pocket near the score board as a teenager and into my twenties having a yell and a stir. Was a good time to say hi to a few people as well. A lot of people always seemed to have their favourite spot to watch the game. Sitting with a local crowd watching guys you played against in juniors or played alongside was part of the thrill as they represented the club you supported. Not sure it’s the same today with the AFL games, guys don’t get that chance but the WAFL games are still worth watching and I still get to see some games every year. I was chatting with few mates talking about our junior footy days and Swans and while we were reminiscing I told the guys about an intra club game I played down at Swans with the league guys when I was about seventeen. I thought I was going ok, had a couple of kicks, taken a couple of marks, thought I had arrived until I decided to try and tackle Keith Narkle. He went past me as if I didn’t exist and then I tried to chase him down, well it was like watching a snail chase a rabbit I had no hope. The mental scars are still there but looking forward to watching Swans again this year. Hopefully I see you down there.
