Do you remember when you parents had set routines that were not negotiable. Now my one to share may not be a popular topic but I am sure has been part of many households. My Dad’s Saturday routine of having a daily double on the Sydney races every Saturday he called it his fifty cent investment. So by ten o’clock every Saturday he would visit the local TAB and place his bet. He would spend time examining all the papers and buy his best bet book every week to study the form. Now I know I should not be encouraging gambling but this was a set routine also was his set routine to catch up with other locals for a chat on a Saturday morning it was their meeting place as well. The TAB in Guildford was between the Stirling Arms and the Guildford Shopping Centre central to everyone. Dad this time of year had a busy routine get his bets on dash out to see my Nanna in Hazelmere check she was ok drop in some shopping if needed and rush home and get ready for a big days at bowls. Dad love his bowls and been a member of the Swan Blowing Club since a young man as his father played there as well, so did my mum, my aunty, uncles and cousins so was big part of the Rendell routine. My Dad drove a 1958 Black VW Beetle and I would see him dashing around town in his car which I called his mean machine. TAB’s are being closed quite regularly now replaced by on-line gambling my Dad would say it’s all wrong how am I going to get the tips from me mates and have a chat any more. Times have changed even for the gamblers.
